How we handle our VAT while Mia Accounting gets MTD-ready

How we handle our VAT while Mia Accounting gets MTD-ready

We're building Mia Accounting to file VAT under Making Tax Digital (MTD) — but it isn't there yet. Under MTD, VAT returns have to be submitted through software that HMRC has recognised, and Mia Accounting is currently going through that approval process.

In the meantime, we still have our own VAT returns to file. Rather than wait, we use My Tax Digital (mytaxdigital.co.uk) to submit them — a straightforward, MTD-compatible tool that keeps us digital and compliant while our own product is approved.

We're being open about this on purpose. Building recognised tax software takes time and proper approval, and we'd rather tell you exactly where we are than pretend otherwise. So we're doing it the right way — and using a reliable tool to cover our own filing until Mia Accounting can take over.

Once Mia Accounting is MTD-approved, we'll move our own VAT onto it — and you'll be able to as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mia Accounting MTD for VAT ready?

Not fully yet. Mia Accounting is being built to meet MTD for VAT requirements, but the direct HMRC submission feature isn't finished. Until then, MTD-compatible bridging software should be used for VAT submissions.

How does Mia Bazo handle its own VAT while Mia Accounting gets MTD-ready?

Mia Bazo is VAT-registered and keeps its own VAT records digitally, using MTD-compatible bridging software to submit returns to HMRC. This keeps them compliant while the native submission feature in Mia Accounting is completed.

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT?

MTD for VAT is an HMRC requirement that businesses keep VAT records digitally and submit returns using functional compatible software linked directly to HMRC's systems. It also requires digital links between systems so figures aren't manually copied.

What should Mia Accounting customers do about VAT submissions right now?

VAT-registered customers should continue using MTD-compatible or bridging software to submit their VAT returns until direct HMRC submission is available in Mia Accounting. Mia Bazo will announce clearly when that feature is ready.

When will Mia Accounting support direct HMRC VAT submission?

There's no fixed date yet, as Mia Bazo is prioritising getting the feature right over releasing it early. They'll update their blog with full details once direct HMRC submission is live.
